Objectives of the Course
The aims of the course is to provide learners the knowledge relevant to concepts and fundamental principles of biotechnology, to recognize biotechnological methods and techniques in agricultural production and in the field of plant protection, in particular and to apply them and to question the benefits and risks of genetically modified organisms and their products for human, nature and environment.

Learning Outcomes
1Define the historical progress, importance and ranges of biotecnology and comprehend its potential in agricultural production
2Express the relationships between the techniques of plant cell and tissue cultures and genetic engineering
3Realize the structure, synthesis, isolation and analysis of nucleic acids and proteins
4Explain how genes are transferred in order to produce transgenic plants resistant to herbicides, plant pathogens and insects
5Compare classical and developed biotechnological process for obtaining resistant plants to pathogens and insects for duration and application
6Debate and evaluate the possible effects of biotechnological applications and approaches upon man, plants and environment for bioethic and biosafety

• Definition and historical development and application areas of biotechnology, • Macromolecules in living organisms and their uses for biotechnology aims • Plant cell, tissue and organ cultures and their applications in plant production • The methods and techniques utilized in expression, isolation and transfer of genes • Biotechnological methods and techniques used in the field of plant protection, development and utilization of transgenic plants for the purposes in plant protection • The beneficial and detrimental aspects of genetically modified plants, organisms and their products for agricultural production, human and environment • The analysis methods of transgenic plants and products
