Objectives of the Course
The main aim of this course is to examine social policies in connection with economics science. Issues such as social security, labor markets, education, demography, income distribution and health are focused on. The course covers how economists research these topics, identifies the problems related to these fields in Turkey and around the world and various policy approaches are debated.

Course Contents
The course focuses on social security, labor markets, education, demography, income distribution and health from an economists perspective. Basic concepts and tools of analyses employed in the stated fields of interest are summarized. Through research based on presented conceptual framework and research tools, problems in Turkey and around the world are presented. Policy formulations aimed to resolve identified social problems are debated through policy texts of various institutions.

4Social Security 3: Analysis of reforms. Overlapping Generations models. OLG analysis of social security reform in Turkey.
5Labor Markets 1: Concepts. Problems of labor market. Stylised facts of labor market in Turkey.
6Labor Markets 2: Limited dependent variable estimation as a tool for labor market analysis
7Labor Markets 3: Discrimination in labor markets. Market failures
8Midterm Exam
9Labor Market 4: Informal employment: Definitions. Size of informal employment in Turkey and around the world. Related policy approaches.
10Education 1: Economic importance of human capital. Growth and human capital.
11Education 2: Intrafamily transfer of human capital. Returns to education.
12Demography: Concepts. Demographic dynamics in Turkey and around the world. Aging population and policy.
13Income distribution: Concepts and measurement. Income distribution in Turkey and policy.
14Health: Health and development. Health supply and demand. Importance of the government for health. Health systems.
