Course Contents
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of political history from the Enlightenment to dissolution of the Soviet Union. Its aim is to give students a good grounding for subsequent courses on international relations and to build up a general knowledge of the processes and events that shaped the modern world. Topics such as the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the Concert of Europe, and the two world wars, cold war and sequel will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between processes of social and economic change (the rise of liberalism and nationalism, the industrial revolution), and the emergence of modern political systems in Europe. We will also explore the links between social transformation and the changes in diplomatic relations and the international system more generally.
