General Description
History
The department was founded in 1956 as the Soil Science and Plant Nutrition Divisions. The main objectives of the the department are to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and carry on research activities on diversified soil, soil genesis, soil fertility, plant nutrition and fertilization problems
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering-Soil Science and Plant Nutrition ( first cycle in Agricultural Engineering-Soil Science and Plant Nutrition ) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements
The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
The department of carries out a 4-year program to educate students to become an agricultural engineer on open field, protected cultivation, breeding and post-harvest handling of horticultural crops. The program is composed of two-years of basic compulsory courses on science and agriculture. Third and fourth years are devoted mainly to horticulture and related topics. There are theoretical and practical (field and laboratory) courses. However, few electives and term-works prepared allow students to focus on products/topics that they are interested.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Agriculture Engineer who have completed the undergraduate education successfully from Soil Science and Plant Nutrition Department can get work in public and private sector.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Facilities
Education and research facilities are conducted in two greenhouse on 545m2, 6 ha of experimental field and 12 laboratories. Soil physics laboratory, Soil chemistry laboratory, Soil mapping laboratory, Soil genetics laboratory, Soil-water conversation and erosion control laboratory, Soil microbiology laboratory, Radioisotope and Analitical chemistry laboratory, Plant nutrition and soil fertility laboratory, Remote sensing and Geographical information systems(GIS) laboratory, Routine analysis laboratory, Student application laboratory, Plant physiology laboratory.

Key Learning Outcomes
1He can define the chemical, physical, optical, and formation properties of soils, rocks and minerals. Interprets and evaluates the data obtained

3He can understand the basic physical principles of soil and solve the problems of associated with them. Identify, analyz and research the problems. Develops evidence-based solutions.
4He can define the engineering properties of soils. He can evaluate the dynamic reactions that take place during tillage. Uses obtained information for benefit of community.
5He can identify and mapping of agricultural objects by using advanced cartographic materials and data sets. He can work interdisciplinary .
6He can identify main materials and topographic conditions that effect formation of soil. Interprets and evaluates the data obtained.
7He can define, classify and map soil properties. He explicates and evaluates obtained parameters.
8He can explicate and manage the cultural applications on plants and plants behaviours under stress conditions. He explicates and evaluates obtained parameters.
9He produces solutions regarding soil and water pollution. He can calculate soil loss which occurs by soil and water erosion and can take precautions. He uses obtained informations for the benefit of society.
10He has knowledge on methodology and timing of classifying (annual and perennial, vegetable and fruit i.e.), nutrition (fertilizing), quantity of fertilizers which will be given by soil and plant analyses to obtain optimum yield and quality of crop plants. He defines problems, analyses and produces solutions based on researches and evidences.
11He can analyse plant structure and metabolism on the level of devoloping biotechnology. He explicates and evaluates obtained parameters.
12He gains laboratory experience regarding physical and chemical analyses; he can evaluate, explicate and report results of analyses.
13He can prepare fertilizing programs for diffirent production patterns(fruit-vegetable, ornamental and greenhouse plants). He can put these programs into practise, define problems, analyse and produce solutions based on researches and evidences.
14He can decide correctly about fertilization of plants in organic and conventional production systems and define nutrition problems. He questions, researches and proposes solutions.
15He can relate soil quality and multi-functional properties of microbial population in soil ecosystem. He can practise and evaluate microbiological soil analyses. He examines and researches.
16He can explain the results of chemical reactions which occur in soil with regards to soil productivity. He can practise and evaluate chemical soil analyses. He uses obtained informations for the benefit of society.
17He can operate new technologies and methods in sustainable agriculture. He analyses and produces solutions based on researches and evidences.
18He has proffessional and ethical sense of responsibility. He supports his thoughts and solution offers regarding problems with obtained parameters, shares with experts and non-experts.
19He knows local, national, international importance of his profession and behaves appropriate to his status. He follows foreign researches, communicates with colleagues, studies inter-disciplinary.
