General Description
History
Regulation of Blood and Blood Products" which was prepared and published according to the "Blood and Blood Products Law" came into force on 4.12.2008. The new law maintained full compliance the World Health Organization and the European Union Directives (WHO) and the European Commission and a new ‘Regional Blood banking’ based system was introduced in order to ensure safe and adequate blood and blood components. 'Blood Donation Centers' are employed in the organization of safe blood collection from blood donors; 'Regional Blood Centers' are assigned in the processing, storage and distribution of blood with quality assurance and Transfusion Centers are obliged to perform pre-transfusion compatibility testing with high accuracy and to ensure the traceability of blood. Thus highly qualified and experienced professionals are required in this field in order to ensure the success of this new practice. Undergraduate and postgraduate training programs in our country provide little or no information about Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. Ministry of Health certification programs lasting one month and five months are conducted to cover the shortage of trained staff need in this field. Ege University is assigned as the central coordinator since 2003 in this certification program. This certification program is insufficient to become competent in a specific field, such as laboratory Blood Banking. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive program in this field for the provision of safe and adequate collection and processing of blood and blood products and ensuring the standardization of basic issues such as storage and transport.

Specialists in medicine and doctors with ongoing education of specialty can apply this programme.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The programme consists of at least seven lectures not less than 21 local credits, lectures of specialty, a qualifying examination and thesis. The total credit of the programme should be 240 ECTS and 120 ECTS belongs to thesis.
Profile of The Programme
Medical doctors who complete this programme will have expertise in transfusion immunology, serology and safety and will improve accurate skills and attitude in this field. These physicians will have competence in transfusion immunology, serology, molecular biology issues and will organize the necessary infrastructure for conducting research and development activities in these areas.

Student enrolled in the programme must get a grade of at least 2.50 out of 4.00 in order to be successful.
Graduation Requirements
In order to get a PhD degree required and elective lessons should consist of at least 7 with 21 local credits and 240 ECTS credits. Successfull quailification exam and completion of a thesis is required (120 credits) to be successful.

Facilities
Ege University Blood Center is one of the three Regional blood centers in the Aegean Region with 30,000 blood donations and total of 65000 blood products per year. Platelet apheresis is also done in the center. The center consists of Blood Collection and Apheresis Unit, Immunhematology Laboratory, Component Unit and Serology Laboratory. These units contain sufficient technical equipment required to peform the necessary actions of modern Blood Banking such as donor acceptance, separation and processing of blood products, microbiological screening tests and immunhematologic tests. Ege University HLA Tissue Type Laboratory, Pediatric Immunology Laboratory, Cell Culture Laboratory of Stem Cell Laboratory, tissue cryopreservation Laboratory, Therapeutic Apheresis Unit and Hematology Laboratory may be used when necessary.

1Ability to perform immuno-hematological and serological studies with an investigative and analytic approach, suggesting proper further tests, providing effective laboratory and clinical consultation
2Investigation of clinical transfusion reactions, gaining experience on the diagnostic evaluation and follow-up on the basis of scientific evidence
3Collection, processing, storage and distribution of blood and its components with high-efficiency , and gaining knowledge and experience on the efficient use of Hemapheresis technologies
4Providing information and experience on the principles of therapeutic apheresis principles and its clinical use in a variety of diseases, gaining experience in planning and medical observation of therapeutic apheresis procedures
5Providing information and experience on collection and processing of peripheral blood stem cell
6Gaining information and experience on the use of Molecular HLA / serological (DNA) typing and flow cytometry in Transfusion Medicine
7Gaining knowledge and experience on the functions and duties of hospital transfusion committee
8Ability to use information technology to manage informationc and to use statistical methods
9Ability to write, perform and present a research project independently
10Ability to present both his/her experience on the field of specialty and the results of a scientific project at the professional level in a scientific environment and ability to write a scientific manuscript
11Ability to plan and perform research and development projects on transfusion immunology, serology and molecular biology
