Objectives of the Course
This course aims to teach the fundamental elements of Turkish cinema. The course will focus on silent period and talking picture period in Turkish cinema, elements of production and demonstration conditions, success of early cinematographers and others. Besides it will focus on “Yeşilçam” conditions, relations between “social changing and cinema” and “viewers and cinema”, analysis of Turkish cinema from past to the present.

First film demonstration in Turkey. Impact of artistic and social conditions on the cinema. Periods of Turkish cinema like, “Yeşilçam”, Cinematographers and New Cinematographers etc.

5Effects of West in Turkish cinema and adaptations. Examples.
6Formation of “Yeşilçam”. Industrial cinema in Turkey. Production and distribution relations. Stars, tabloid magazines and viewers.
7Period of Cinematographers and national cinema in Turkey- Part I: Turkish auteurs.
8Mid-term exam.
9Part II: New auteurs in Turkish cinema.
10Watching and evaluation of example film.
11New Cinematographers, social changing and Turkish cinema.
12Different genres in the Turkish cinema.
13Approaches in the Turkish cinema between 1980-1990.
14New approaches and international successes of Turkish cinema after year 2000.
15Evaluation of homework. General evaluation.
16Final exam.
