General Description
History
Faculty of Fisheries is one of 11 faculties of Ege University which was founded in 1955 in İzmir. It has been providing undergraduate and graduate education since 1982. Education in the faculty proceeds via semester system. During the 2009-2010 academic calendar year, a total of 1200 undergraduate and 159 graduate students have enrolled in the Faculty of Fisheries. Total study period in the faculty is 5 years including the voluntary English preparatory class in the first year. Hydrobiology and general fisheries engineering classes are taught during the first three years of education in the faculty. Students are divided among Hydrobiology, Aquaculture, Fish Capture and Processing Technology programs in the fourth year and they are trained to use the technology and provided with experience in the related area via lectures and applied courses. Faculty of Fisheries carries out scientific research with its experienced academic personnel. The faculty has 119 lecturers including the research assistants. Education and research activities are also supported with 53 non-academic personnel. There are many regional, national and international research projects. Collaborative research projects have been carried out with foreign institutes. The faculty hosts national and international meetings, seminars, symposia, and congresses every year to solve problems or to share ideas and results of research projects.
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries Engineering ( first cycle in Fisheries Engineering) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
Faculty of Fisheries have been founded to train personnel and researchers expert in the areas of Marine and Freshwater Sciences, Fisheries and Aquaculture; and to do research and publish in these areas. For this reason the faculty aims to provide students with necessary applications in addition to lectures and aims to help national fisheries and aquaculture industries. The faculty tries to solve application related problems for fisherman and aquaculture farms and does research in those areas. In accordance with this, cooperation is established with the regional fisherman and fish farmers. The faculty accepts information production, method development and accumulation of knowledge as its jobs to reach the production targets. There are mandatory and elective courses in addition to liberal education courses in the education plan. The faculty yields graduates that will recognize and solve problems in fisheries either by themselves or by working in groups.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates of Fisheries Faculty can work at government and private industry institutions and farms including various units of the Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, and fisheries businesses and aquaculture farms.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Success in a course is determined by applying 40% of the mid-term exam and 60% of the final exam. In addition pre-determined individual activities for each course are added to the grades at determined ratios.

Facilities
There are 34 Professors, 20 Associate Professors, 20 Assistant Professors, and 40 Research Assistants in the faculty. There are three main buildings of the faculty including one in Urla, Bornova and another one in Dalyan that covers a 18.000 decare area close to the Bird Paradise. 110 tons research vessel EGESUF, which is located in Urla, is used for fisheries and other types of research. EGESUF was designed as a research vessel and started operation in 1994. It is 27 m long, 6.5 m wide and operates with a 463 HP engine. The faculty also has two 6.5 m long boats and two Zodiac boats. SUFA lagoon has been transferred to the faculty in 1988 and has been used as a research area. Various fish traps and nets have been placed here. Mullet and sea-bream are two of the most produced fishes in the lagoon. Each program has many laboratories set-up according to the necessities and a library for academic personnel and students. Academic staff and students use the Ege University Computer Center and computer labs for data analyses.
