General Description
History
Astronomy and Space Sciences Department has been established in the 1962-63 academic year depending on Chair of Mathematics and began training activities. Since there was not a faculty member at the beginning, courses of lectures were given by faculty members from Ankara and İstanbul Universities. Early in 1963 by the appointment of the first faculty member, it separated from Mathematics Department and became an independent department. In the same year four research assistant were recruited to the department. Then teaching staff were trained by faculty members from abroad and, in addition to training and education programs the research facilities has become implemented by faculty members of the department itself. In 1965, Ege University Research and Application Center of Astronomy depending on the department were established. Both training of students and scientific research were conducted at this center and is currently being carried out. The scientific researches made at this center are published in international journals. The center has directed common scientific researches with some centers in Europe and USA.
Qualification Awarded
An undergraduate degree in the field of Astronomy and Space Sciences is given to graduates who have successfully completed the program. Our graduates take the “Astronomer” title.

Specific Admission Requirements
Candidates have to possess high school and equivalent education diploma and must have received enough points from Transition to Higher Education and Graduate Placement Examination.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Exemption exams are held for Computer and English courses at the beginning of each academic term. Students, who think that he/she has the expected learning outcomes of this courses, are entitled to take the exemption exams. Successful students are exempt from the relevant course in curriculum.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
To complete all the courses which are available in the program, for a total of 240 ECTS, it is required to obtain a minimum 2.00 weighted GPA (Grade Point Average) over 4.00.
Profile of The Programme
Program of Astronomy and Space Sciences is conducting a training plan for the purpose of educating modern astronomers who have the knowledge and abilities in the field of Astronomy and Space Sciences; can use his/her mathematics and physics knowledge in Astronomy and Space Sciences field, keep abreast of current news in science end tecnology, assimilate the moral science and modern scientific conception; is aware of facts of life and adopt the importance of lifelong learning . The courses in the training program are almost evenly distributed in the branches of Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy. Our students take the basic science lessons based on mathematics and physics during the first four semesters after preparatory school. In the last four semesters they take professional courses as compulsory and elective. In addition to compulsory courses there are elective courses in educational plans for the students to have a chance to choose according to their choice. After the second-year education the students can book up to the formation courses which are required for being a teacher and in the case of completing this course successfully they shall have the right to teach in secondary education institutions.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates who successfully complete this program can take up an academic career in higher education institutions at home and abroad, they can work in the banking sector and male students who meet requirements can work in the Air Force Control Warning units. Graduates who complete the teaching formation courses successfully can teach Astronomy, Mathematics and Physics in secondary schools.
Access to Further Studies
Candidates who have completed the undergraduate education successfully can study at the graduate-doctoral programs on conditions that they get the current score from ALES exam and have adequate English language.

Facilities
Astronomy and Space Sciences Department is composed of two two subsections: General Astronomy and Astrophysics. However the education program is the same for both discipline. In our department total duration of education is 5 years, the first year is for English preparation. Academic staff of our department: In General Astronomy discipline there are 8 faculty member: 6 Professor, 1 Associate professor and 1 Assistant professor. Research Assistant: 1 In Astrophysics there are 9 faculty member : 6 Professor, 2 Associate professor and 1 Assistant professor. Technician: 1

Key Learning Outcomes
1Ability of applying knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry to problems in the field of astronomy and space sciences
2Ability of describing , modelling and solving basic problems in the field of astronomy and space sciences
3Discussing micro properties of matter and making connections between these properties and astronomical structures
4Ability of linking fundamental physical interactions and radiative proccesses, and deduction of information concerning structure and evolution of sources from detected photons
5Deduction of mathematical expressions relavant to astronomy by regarding basic physical phenomenon
6Ability of interpreting structure, formation and evolution of universe as a whole and its constitutes with sophisticated scientific methods
7Ability of obtaining astronomical data by learning basics of observational equipments and methods
8Application of processes related to collection, analysis and interpretation of data
9Keeping abreast the basics of the field, preparing, writing and presenting scientific reports and communicating with counterparts
10Ability of transfering knowledge of astronomy, science, technology, mathematics, physics, computer and informatics to all walks of life including secondary and high school educations.
11To gain and update his/her knowledge of basics of science as a whole
