General Description
History
The Department of Biology at Ege University in Turkey was first founded in 1955 as “Biology Institute” under the constitution of Faculty of Medicine. In 1961, after establishing of Faculty of Science, the Biology education was began under the Faculty as 4 subdivisions: General Botany, Systematic Botany, General Zoology and Systematic Zoology. After 1973, Botany, Zoology, Biological Oceanography and Microbiology departments were founded. In 1982, these departments were converted to sections (Botany, Zoology, Hydrobiology and Basic and Industrial Microbiology) and additional 2 sections (General Biology and Molecular Biology) were collected under the name of Department of Biology. The Biology Department is one of the seven departments at the Faculty of Science. The Biology Department offers a high quality undergraduate specialist Program in Biology which includes 1 year English Language preparation period followed by 4 years. The last two years, students optionally prefer one of Botany, Zoology, Basic and Industrial Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetic Branches as main fields of study for qualification.
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Biology is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum of five main branches of study (Botany, Zoology, Basic and Industrial Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetic), including one month internship period with a title conferred "Biologist".

Specific Admission Requirements
Students are required to be a graduate of high school or equivalent and to take the selection and placement test held annually by the Turkish Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM).
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Exemption exams for English Prep School and Computer courses are carried out and those who pass the exam for exemption are exempt from the corresponding course in the course program.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The Biology Department offers a high quality undergraduate specialist Program in Biology which includes 1 year English Language preparation period followed by 4 years. The education language of the department is in Turkish 70 % and in English 30 %. The Bachelor’s Degree is awarded to Students who must complete one month internship and all courses in the curriculum of each branches with a minimum of 142 credits (240 ECTS credits). Students whose Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) values are below 2.00 on a 4.00 scale are considered unsuccessful. Starting from the end of the second term, Students’ GPAs have to be at least 1.80 to be able to take classes of the upper terms.
Profile of The Programme
In the biology degree programs, we aim to provide teaching in the subject area that is broad based, intellectually coherent and multidisciplinary; that builds on skills and knowledge acquired previously within the program and is informed by a research base of international standard. We intend to produce graduates who are good scientists and who have the intellectual and technical skills necessary to enter careers as biologist. We also aim to meet the needs of students with different levels of ability and sometimes changing interests. Students will also develop the skills, self-confidence, knowledge and ability that are needed to innovate and will be encouraged to develop an appreciation of the value of different perspectives and approaches, including some which derive from disciplines other than biology. Biology Department also offers programs leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. Degrees. These research-intensive programs are complemented by courses on selective topics in Biology. The courses for all levels are taught by department teaching staff and a few outside lecturers from other departments.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Biologists are in demand in a wide range of areas and the employment rate for new graduates is excellent. Graduates of Biology may apply to the following main fields of work or employment; Research; Biologists might join a research team in a university, research institutes, research and development departments in private and public sector or pharmaceutical company, using their scientific skills and practical ability, besides some councils such as agricultural, medical and natural environmental and etc. Another largest area of employment for biologists is industry such as pharmaceutical, food, and brewing, offers a wide variety of work from laboratory based research for those with intellectual and practical scientific talents, to sales, marketing, purchasing and production for those who have a commercial and managerial affair. About half of the biology graduates who work for industry go into laboratory based jobs. Besides those, there are jobs in the laboratories of hospitals as scientists and technicians. Education is one of the major areas of employment again covering the spectrum of academic ability. A biology degree provides an ideal basis for entering the teaching profession. In terms of numbers, most biologists that follow an educational career enter secondary school teaching, for which the best route is via a degree course and post-graduate certificate in education. On the other hand, at the upper end of the academic spectrum, there are positions in Universities as lecturers.
Access to Further Studies
Students holding B.Sc. degrees are eligible to apply for the M.Sc. programs, and those holding M.Sc. degree are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. program according to the conditions defined by individual programs. A valid score from ALES, administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) of Turkey and Language Proficiency test is required in English.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Facilities
Biology Department includes 21 full Professors, 14 Associate Professors, 8 Assistant Professor, 1 Lecturer, 25 research assistants and 6 technical staff. Education in Biology Department is conducted basically by lecturers in department and some lecturers from outside of department.
