General Description
History
Ege University Department of Civil Engineering belongs to Faculty of Engineering has started its education program in the academic year of 1994 – 1995. The aim of the program is to provide high quality education in undergraduate and graduation programs, carrying out the research work effectively, besides, collaborating with industrial partners and provide technical solutions efficiently.
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering ( first cycle in Civil Engineering) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
The program includes six divisions namely, construction, hydraulics, geotechnics, transportation, materials of construction and construction management. An academic year contains two semesters of 16 weeks including registration and examination periods. Some courses are also given in summer semester. The language of teaching is in Turkish. At least 30% of the total credit of the courses is given in English. All the courses given in the first two years of the education period are compulsory courses. In the first year, the courses are basic engineering courses, e.g., mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer literacy, technical English, technical drawing. In the following period of education, technical courses related to construction, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation, materials of construction and construction management divisions are given. In the third and fourth years of education the students have to select 2 non-elective courses and 7 elective courses among the various courses. The students have to complete a total of 9 weeks training in 2 different periods. At the last semester of education period, the students have to submit a graduation project based on research and literature survey.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Civil Engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with planning, project management, building and auditing of construction projects by gathering the knowledge of materials and techniques. Thus, the students who have the Bachelors degree from Civil Engineering are employed in many different fields of areas, such as planning, building and auditing of buildings, dams, airfields, bridges, roads, harbor and water structures, sewage systems, water transportation systems, tunnels, railways, light-rail and subway systems, etc.. in private and public companies.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Facilities
The academic staff is composed of 19 full time professors (2 professors, 5 associate professors, 12 assistant professors). Half time instructors support the program by giving some elective courses. 11 research assistants are employed in the department.

1Adequate knowledge in mathematics, science and engineering subjects pertaining to the relevant discipline; ability to use theoretical and applied information in these areas to model and solve engineering problems.
2Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems; ability to select and apply proper analysis and modelling methods for this purpose.
3Ability to design a complex system, process, device or product under realistic constraints and conditions, in such a way so as to meet the desired result; ability to apply modern design methods for this purpose. (Realistic constraints and conditions may include factors such as economic and environmental issues, sustainability, manufacturability, ethics, health, safety issues, and social and political issues according to the nature of the design.)
4Ability to devise, select, and use modern techniques and tools needed for engineering practice; ability to employ information technologies effectively.
