General Description
History
The Deparment of Horticulture is one of the first departments established at Ege University as the Department of Viticulture and Horticulture in 1955. It comprised of three sections: Vegetable Growing and Breeding, Fruit-Grape Growing and Breeding and Landscape Architecture. In 1958, the name of the Department was changed as Growing and Breeding of Horticultural Plants. The section on Landscape Architecture became a separate department as Landscape Architecture and Ornamental Plants in 1979. In 1981, the two sections, Vegetable Growing and Breeding and Fruit-Grape Growing and Breeding were united as the Department of Horticulture and of Horticulture according to the Higher Education Law. Presently, the Department of Horticulture carries out research, training and education activities in the following six fields: Vegetable Growing and Breeding, Fruit Growing and Breeding, Grape Growing and Breeding, Post-harvest Physiology, Protected Cultivation and Growing of Ornamentals. The staff of the Department is composed of 17 professors, 5 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 5 senior research assistant (Ph D) and 5 research assistants. Starting in 1955, the Department accepted students at undergraduate level and the first group graduated in 1959. At present, there are 98 students studying at the 3rd and 4th grades. In 1999, a new curriculum was accepted and since then the students are entering to the Faculty as the Plant Production Program. These students are taking courses related to horticulture as well as field crops, plant protection and other related topics. The post-graduate programs offered by the Department of Horticulture were initiated in 1955 together with the undergraduate level. Until 1981, gratuates receieved the title of ‘MSc. in agricultural engineering however it was changed to ‘BSc. in Agricultural Engineering’ due to transition from 5 years to 4 years. Currently there is a total of 71 post graduate students 28 being at MSc. and 43 at Ph. Degree levels. 34 courses are offered by the Departmental staff at post-graduate level. The post-graduate studies were carried out under the administration of the Faculty of Agriculture but starting in 1983 with the establishment of the Post-Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences such coordination is provided by the Institute. Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering-Horticulture ( first cycle in Agricultural Engineering-Horticulture) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements
The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
The department of Horticulture carries out a 4-year program to educate students to become an agricultural engineer on open field, protected cultivation, breeding and post-harvest handling of horticultural crops. The program is composed of two-years of basic compulsory courses on science and agriculture. Third and fourth years are devoted mainly to horticulture and related topics. There are theoretical and practical (field and laboratory) courses. However, few electives and term-works prepared allow students to focus on products/topics that they are interested.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Agricultural Engineers are working in public and private sectors. Graduates who have deserved the title of Agricultural Engineer; can work in different institutions such as Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade as a civil servant, provided being successful in the required exams. Hence they will aslo have the rights to work in the private sectors such as fertilizer, chemical, seed, seedling, seedling production, storage, export-import, packaging and marketing companies. They also have the opportunity to work certification issues. They can also work as agricultural consulter and food controller or inspector in bakery ovens etc.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Facilities
The current stuff comprises of 21 academicians, out of whom 14 are full-time professors, 3 associate professors, and 4 are assistant professors. Furthermore, 1 expert, 2 agricultural engineer, 2 technicians and 7 research assistants are also working at the department. A total of 35 ha of land area, out of which 10 hectares are irrigated is used for scientific research studies conducted with students and practical trainees. Furthermore, the department has greenhouses in an area of 0.25 hectares, especially for vegetables and ornamental. The department also has laboratories for plant physiology, tissue culture, biotechnology, seed studies and cold storage rooms. The production of fruits, vines, open air vegetable, greenhouse vegetables and ornamental plants is also being performed. Organic agriculture, soilless cultivation are also being done. Laboratories: - Sample preparation and extraction lab: Physical analysis, preparation (cleaning, cutting etc.) of samples for chemical analysis, extraction, wet-ashing, oven drying - Physiology lab: Chemical analysis of samples - Ecophysiology lab: Spectrophotometric analysis, gas chromatographic analysis, leaf area index and photosynthesis measurements - Fruit lab: Mist propagation of cuttings, germination, cutting preparation, preliminary preparation. - Seed lab: Physical and chemical quality analysis of seeds in horticultural crops - Tissue culture lab: Micro propagation of vegetable, fruit and ornamentals - Mushroom lab: Mycelia production - Microscopy lab: Histological studies - Biotechnology lab: Molecular characterization Greenhouses: - Ornamentals - Greenhouse vegetable production: soilless culture and organic production of vegetables - General purpose greenhouse: pot trials on salinity and adaptation of in vitro propagated plants
