General Description
History
Classical Archaeology department was established in 1980.
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Classical Archaeology ( first cycle in Classical Archaeology ) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum

The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
Classical Archaeology deparment studies mainly Greek and Roman civilizations in the Aegean.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates, having been qualified as "archaeologists", may find occupations as academics in the universities, as well as as archaeologists in the state or private museums, in the local municipals or in the Ministery of Culture.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students must attend courses and examinations. Student’s attendance is followed by the instructor. One midterm examination is given during each semester. Dates of midterm examinations are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester. In addition to midterm examinations and other work, students are required to take a final examination. Final examinations are held at the announced date and place. The grade is evaluated by the sum of 40% of the midterm exam and 60% of the final exam grade. Lecturers may also take several other criteria (such as seminar works, written or oral presentations, attendance to the discussions, etc.) into consideration while evaluating the grades.

Facilities
About 70 students graduate from the undergraduate program in the Department of Archaeology. The courses are instructed by the departmental academic staff. Some members of the staff also teach in other departments of the faculty. The students of the department are highly encouraged to participate the excavations, surveys and other archaeological research projects directed by some departmental academic staff. Phokaia (directed by Prof. Dr. Ömer Özyiğit), Claros (directed by Prof. Dr. Nuran ŞAHİN), Antandros (directed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürcan POLAT), Van-Ayanis and Ulucak Höyük (directed by Prof. Dr. Altan ÇİLİNGİROĞLU), Beycesultan (directed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eşraf ABAY), Tripolis (directed by Assist. Prof. Dr. Aytekin ERDOĞAN), Yeşilova Höyük (directed by Assist. Prof. Dr. Zafer Derin) and Kavuşan Höyük (directed by Prof. Dr. Gülriz KOZBE) are among the excavations directed by the Ege University members.

Key Learning Outcomes
1Students will be able to distinguish and analyze stylistic and chronological problems of the archaeological data and material.
2Students will be able to protect archaeological material and to have it publicly recognized within the touristic and environmental context.
3Students will be able to register archaeological data within the visual and verbal framework also with the help of digital documentation sources.
4Students will be able to utilize contemporary techniques and equipment for archaeological applications.
5Students will be able to use various data of histoy, geography, sociology, economics, anthropology and architecture in order to solve or discuss a problem concerning archaeology.
6Students will be able to create a project or to have a responsibility at field (i.e., in an archaeological excavation or survey)
7Students will be able to make disciplinary or interdisciplinary teamwork
8Students will be able to become conscious of the requirement of being aware of the current developments and results of archaeology; follow Turkish and foreign literature (via library and information technologies) and attain these as a lifelong learning habit.
9Students will be able to be aware of the professional and ethical responsibilities.
10Students will be able to make independent decisions and work indepedently during the analysis of the archeolocical problems.
