The Department of Geography was established in 1980 as a part of the “Faculty of Social Sciences” which was later renamed as “Faculty of Letters”. The Department gave its first undergraduates in 1984. Currently, the Department of Geography provides a four-year undergraduate program and postgraduate programs on GIS, human geography and physical geography. |

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal) |
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum. |

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS). |
Profile of The Programme |
The aim of the four-year undergraduate program is provide scientific knowledge on the discipline of geography and other relate disciplines as well. The course program includes compulsory and optional courses considering the current social needs and recent progress in geography. Students can prepare a dissertation in the fourth year under the supervision of an academic in the Department. The Department of Geography has two main sub-branches namely “Human and Economic Geography” and “Physical Geography”. The basis topics of the courses in physical geography sub-branch are landforms (geomorphology), climate (climatology), waters (terrestrial hydrography and oceanography) and biogeography. Within the human geography sub-branch, on the other hand, courses are given on population, culture, settlement, agriculture, industry and economics. Students have to take courses from both sub-branches. Some of the courses are on the countries and regions such as Central Asian countries, Middle East, the Caucasians and regions of Turkey.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples |
Graduates of the Geography Department mostly work as teachers for various schools. In recent years, the number of geography teachers in private educational institutions has increased. Graduates can find positions in related state intuitions other than schools in less numbers. However, GIS, which has become a popular specialization within geography, provides the graduates to find job in this area (The undergraduate program includes various courses of GIS). |
Access to Further Studies |
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines. |
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading |
Students have to attend the classes and exams. The attendance of the students is followed by the lecturer. Each course has a written mid-term exam. The program of the exams is announced in the first month of a term. A final exam is held in the end of the term for each course. Provided that a valid excuse is declared (for example, health problems), a student can take an excuse examination. The score of a course is calculated with the 40% contribution of the mid-term exam and 60% contribution of the final exam. Scores may be affected by attendance, seminars given and papers written as to the consideration of the lecturer. |
