General Description
History
The Department of English Language and Literature at Ege University was founded in 1976, as the Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Social Sciences. In the 1982-1983 academic year, the programme was run for the first time under the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, until 22 February 1994, when it became an independent department once again. The first graduates of the department were those of the year 1979-1980. Today, the department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Letters offers both graduate and postgraduate (MA and PhD) education.
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in English Language and Literature ( first cycle in English Language and Literature) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum

Specific Admission Requirements
The general requirements explained in “General Admission Requirements” of Information on the Institution part are applied for admission of students.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their educaiton to obtain Bachelor’s degrees if they are successful in the selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Ege University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
The department of English Language and Literature aims to educate philologists who have adopted ethical values, who are aware of the realities of the world, who have adopted the importance of life long learning, equipped with the knowledge, skills and approaches necessary to serve in all areas of English philology. The BA programme consisting of a total of 8 semesters in 4 years, aims to provide students with an advanced level of language skills, core knowledge in literary terms, literary history, literary theory and criticism, culture, and vocational competence in language, literature, criticism and cultural studies.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates of English Language and Literature will find vocational opportunities in publishing houses, magazines, literary and cultural journals, newspapers, film studios, various public institutions (such as the Turkish Radio and Television Institution - TRT, the Foreign Office, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of National Education etc.), international institutions, as well as European Community projects and institutions. Graduates can also focus on areas of translation that require specific terminology and specialise as translators and/or interpreters in fields such as medicine, economy, archaeology, automotive and law. Job opportunities are also available in tourism. They can enter the teaching profession at public or independent schools after having gained a Teaching Certificate. Furthermore, graduates may pursue an academic career by taking up scientific study at universities (at Master’s and Doctorate levels).
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Facilities
With a total of 11 teaching staff, the department offers a comprehensive programme for 350 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate students. The undergraduate programme encompasses the periods of English Language and Literature from the very beginning to today. Certain literary texts are analysed within the scope of literary theories, with reference to the periods they were written in. Alongside social and cultural activities such as student seminars, festivals and sports events, every two years in the month of May, the department of English Language and Literature organises an International Cultural Studies Symposium, in collaboration with the department of American Culture and Literature. Department resources include classrooms with audio-visual electronic devices, a computer lab open to student use, and a student library.

Key Learning Outcomes
1Upon completing the undergraduate programme, graduates are expected to: Have gained adequate knowledge of English Language, Literature and Culture
2Have obtained a general knowledge of Literatures in English (USA, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, etc.)
3Have adequate knowledge of literary genres, concepts and terms
4Have theoretical and practical knowledge of the systematic structure, mechanics and transformations of language
5Be able to apply literary, critical, historical and linguistic approaches to textual analysis
6Have knowledge of a second foreign language, other than English
7Be able to comparatively apply their knowledge of English Literature and Culture to other Western Cultures and Literatures as well as Turkish Culture and Literature
8Obtain (English Language) Teaching Certificates and qualify to work as English Teacher
9Be able to produce efficient translations by developing translation strategies for different text types
10Be able to utilise analytic strategies during the process of freethinking and incorporate the results in critical and creative processes to generate new ideas and projects
11Be able to transfer the extent of knowledge, communication skills, critical viewpoint and flexibility they have gained through the study of culture and literature to other areas of life (teaching, tourist guiding, translation, international relations, editing, etc.)
12Have developed a world view that is aware and critical of elements such as language, religion, gender, cultural and sexual identities and diversities
13Be able to make use of the knowledge and skills they have obtained in awareness of their professional and ethical responsibilities, and develop independent operative skills by taking initiative
